And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. Isaiah 12:4 ESV
1 Samuel 17
This is such a triumphant story of God’s power operating through His people. The enemy of our souls entices us to battle but we don’t have to play because the Lord can handle any battle sent our way. Obedience gives me victory every single time. It always impresses me that David didn’t leave the sheep on their own but with a care taker. He took his responsibility as anyone should. Making his father’s house free means free from taxation. If I want to win public victories, I must win the private ones first. David knew that God was on his side and there was no losing against the enemy. I can’t lose in any battle knowing the Lord is with me and the One taking care of the battle. Saul was so unaware of his environment he did not even recognize David as the one who played the harp for him.
Once again Isaiah prophecies exactly what will happen as it did when our Lord came to earth, what is happening in our lifetime and the rest when he returns.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Here begins Paul’s Apostolic and Missionary journeys. Signs and wonders and miracles are to draw people’s attention to the Lord, then it is up to them to choose the Lord’s way or not. More proof that all God says is true by more fulfillment of prophecy. Here begins the journey to share the Lord with people of all nations.
Meditate & Apply: God can use anyone. David was a young man who was a stinky shepherd (sheep stink!). David had a real heart for the Lord though and these are the people God can use for victory in circumstances. My part is that I don’t have to respond to the enticement of the enemy to battle him with anything but the Word of God and therein lies my victory. Everything the Lord declares in the Scripture happens. I have so much to rejoice about in the Lord! Missions throughout the world has not stopped and will not stop until all have had an opportunity to hear the Gospel. Lord, I know we have done such a small part but thank You for taking us to the ends of the earth to share the Good News and speak into the Ministers and people’s lives for Your Glory!
Your comment about winning private victories before public ones reminds me of being faithful in the little things before God trusts us with the big things. Thank you, Lord, that you walk with us every step of the way!
Your comment about David being responsible made me think about some of his other previous times with the lion and bear - not just responsible but courageously so! Like a step further, where we don't just do what we're supposed to but go all the way with God!
